SIBU: Police have arrested a man believed to have attacked his wife and daughter with a machete, leaving both seriously injured at their home in Permai Jaya here.

Sibu police chief Assistant Commissioner Zulkipli Suhaili said the 57-year-old suspect was detained by a special task force in the Kanowit area at 4.15pm yesterday.

“The suspect will be remanded at the Sibu Magistrate’s Court to assist in the investigation.

Police are still working to determine the motive of the incident, and the case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code,” he said in a statement.

Earlier, Zulkipli said police received a report about a fight resulting in serious injuries to a mother and daughter at around 7am.

“The police report was received through an emergency call to MERS 999 made by one of the victims, informing that she and her mother had been attacked with a machete by her own father,” he said.

Following the report, a special task force was set up to track down the suspect, and swift police action led to his arrest in Kanowit.

As a result of the attack, the suspect’s wife was reported to be in critical condition and is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Sibu Hospital, while his 20-year-old daughter sustained severe head injuries but is reported to be stable.
