KUALA KANGSAR: The magistrate’s court here today granted bail of RM1,500 each to five teenagers, who were arrested after a viral video showed them riding motorcycles dangerously and obstructing an ambulance on the North-South Expressway.
The five, all aged 17, had earlier pleaded guilty to charges of riding motorcycles in a dangerous manner before magistrate Mohd Shazmeer Zamhari.
The bail with one surety each was allowed pending a moral behaviour report from the Social Welfare Department before sentencing.
The court set Jan 5 for mention. All five posted bail.
The accused were found riding their Yamaha 135LC motorcycles recklessly and dangerously to the public at Km249 of the North-South Expressway (Southbound) here around 3.15pm on Oct 19.
The offence under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, read together with Section 91(1) of the Child Act 2021, carries a maximum jail term of five years and a fine between RM5,000 and RM15,000, with conviction details to be endorsed on the offender’s driving licence.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Mirza Zulaikha Mohd Fadzly appeared for the prosecution, while all the accused were represented by Hennie Soraya Hanafi from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
Yesterday, Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin confirmed the arrests of the school students for riding dangerously and obstructing an ambulance’s path.
Investigations found that a Health Ministry ambulance had been heading to an accident spot at Km260 in the same direction when its route was obstructed by the group.
The suspects were arrested on Monday in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, and remanded for two days following the circulation of a 33-second video, which was detected by the Kuala Kangsar district police headquarters.
