KUALA LUMPUR, October 28 — The Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC) stood by its decision to charge two Penang schoolteachers over the caning of a student.
In a statement, the AGC stated that the charges that were brought on October 6 over the caning, that was said to have caused injury to the student, were established after a thorough review found sufficient grounds.
The teachers are alleged to have acted beyond the established regulations, necessitating the AGC’s actions to ensure the protection of children’s welfare and to prevent any actions that exceed the boundaries of existing laws.
However, the AGC empasised that the charges are not meant to undermine the teaching profession, but were made after considering various factors, including the rights and welfare of the affected student, who is disabled.
Both teachers were charged for separate offences under Section 324 of the Penal Code [Act 574] on October 6 at Magistrate Courts (2) and (3) in Georgetown, Penang.
