KUALA LUMPUR: Cambodian prisoners of war will undergo a thorough health check-up as part of their release, says Thailand’s deputy spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, Maratee Andamo.
She said the International Committee of the Red Cross would conduct the check-ups, in line with international standards and practices.
“The (release) process will not take many days. I have been told that the process has started. We will be watching this very closely this week for all concrete steps taken,” she said at a press conference held on the sidelines of the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits here on Tuesday (Oct 28).
Maratee added that the Joint Declaration between Thailand and Cambodia serves as a starting point for both sides.
This includes the withdrawal of heavy weapons and the process of releasing prisoners war.
The peace declaration was signed by Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and his Cambodian counterpart, Hun Manet, on Sunday (Oct 26).
It was witnessed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and United States President Donald Trump.
Thailand and Cambodia have long been in dispute over their 817km border, with recent tensions flaring into a military confrontation on July 24.
Meanwhile, Maratee said Thailand reiterated its commitment towards multilateralism and a rules-based international order at the Asean-United Nations Summit, also held on the sidelines of the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits.
This includes expressing its readiness to cooperate with the United Nations to step up humanitarian assistance to Myanmar while advancing cooperation to address online scams.
“We propose to convene an international conference to foster international cooperation in combating online scams,” she said.
