Tables, chairs fly as brawl breaks out over motorcycle noise, nine arrested

BATU PAHAT: Police arrested nine men, including a teenager, over a brawl that broke out at an eatery in Rengit here on Sunday night.

The fight, which is believed to have been triggered by anger over a noisy motorcycle’s loud engine, took place at 10.30pm.

A video of the incident has gone viral.

The over 1-minute video shows several men arguing before one of them overturns a motorcycle. Moments later, chaos erupts as tables, chairs, and helmets are hurled inside the restaurant.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the nine suspects, aged between 18 and 35, were detained at 12.10am on Monday.

All suspects have been remanded for four days until Thursday,” he said when contacted.

The case is being probed under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting, which carries a jail term of up to five years, a fine, or both, upon conviction.

He said preliminary investigations indicate that the fight stemmed from dissatisfaction because one of the suspects allegedly revved his motorcycle loudly, disturbing diners and nearby residents.

Several items at the eatery were damaged during the altercation, although no serious injuries were reported.
