PONTIAN: An 86-year-old man escaped with minor injuries after his car crashed into a petrol station in Permas here yesterday morning.

In the 10.30am incident, the man was heading to the station to fuel up, when he mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.

The vehicle lurched forward, crashing into two motorcycles before ramming through the station’s convenience store glass door and coming to a stop inside.

The impact shattered the glass door and damaged several display racks, but no other patrons or workers were injured.

District police chief Superintendent Mohammad Shofee Tayib said driver sustained minor injuries to his right leg and received outpatient treatment at the Pontian Hospital.

Police are investigating the case under Rule 10 of the Road Traffic Rules 1957 and Section 119 of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a fine of up to RM2,000, imprisonment of up to six months, or both, upon conviction.

Shofee advised road users, especially senior drivers, to remain alert and cautious behind the wheel to ensure safety on the road.
