KUALA LUMPUR: The government has appointed a contractor to complete works on the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency’s (MMEA) Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) 2 and OPV 3.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the Finance Ministry has approved a contractor to complete the works via a letter dated Aug 15, this year.

“The Home Ministry is currently preparing the Letter of Acceptance before the contractor begins work,” he said in a written parliamentary reply last night.

The question was posed by Commander (Rtd) Nordin Ahmad Ismail (PN-Lumut) on the status of the two OPVs.

In February, Saifuddin said that will proceed with the procurement of Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) 2 and 3 for the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) after the previous shipbuilder failed to complete the project.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the Cabinet recently decided on a mutual termination agreement with the company after it delivered only the first OPV, three years behind schedule.

However, Saifuddin said the ministry has yet to determine which shipbuilder will be selected to complete the remaining OPVs.
