LANGKAWI: Three ferries undergoing repairs at a shipyard in Bukit Malut here were damaged in a fire early this morning.
No casualties were reported in the 2.15am incident.
Langkawi Fire and Rescue Zone 4 chief Superintendent Mohd Zamri Abd Ghani said the department received an emergency call at 2.29am.
“Four fire engines from Persiaran Putra, Langkawi and Padang Matsirat fire stations, with 21 personnel, were deployed to the scene.
“Upon arrival five minutes later, the team found three ferries moored at the jetty engulfed in flames,” he said in a statement today.
The affected vessels were identified as Feri Bahagia 99, which was 90 per cent destroyed; Coral Island (70 per cent); and Bahagia 8 (10 per cent).
“The blaze was fully brought under control by 3.37am. Another ferry nearby was towed away to prevent it from catching fire,” he added.
The cause of the blaze and the estimated cost of the damage are under investigation, authorities said.
