KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said Malaysia has reaffirmed that it will consider Timor-Leste a fully functional and effective partner within the Asean community.
The prime minister said Malaysia recognises Timor-Leste’s challenges and ambitions, and is dedicated to collaborating closely to reinforce the Asean community.
“I assure you that we will consider Timor-Leste a fully functional and effective partner.
“While others may not read every detail, we understand your trials, hopes, and aspirations, and we are committed to building Asean together,” he said during his opening remarks at the reception on the occasion of Timor-Leste’s admission to Asean.
Anwar also expressed gratitude for the country’s willingness to accept and implement all conditions agreed upon during the accession discussions.
He noted that, despite initial challenges, Timor-Leste met the requirements with determination and success, earning Malaysia’s heartfelt thanks.
Addressing his opening remarks, Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão said Timor-Leste marked a historic moment yesterday with the signing of the Declaration of Accession, officially becoming the 11th member of the Asean community.
He said the ceremony, attended by distinguished guests such as the leaders from Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea, highlighted the country’s milestone in regional integration.
“Yesterday, at the signing of the Declaration of Accession, we witnessed a historic moment that will forever be remembered in the history of Timor-Leste and our region.
“On behalf of the government and people of Timor-Leste, I once again express our profound gratitude to the Government and people of Malaysia, to all Asean member states for welcoming us into this great family,” he said.
Gusmão also described the event as a celebration of friendship and unity, emphasising the importance of culture, music, dance, and storytelling in expressing the country’s spirit and identity.
