KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said the Association of South-east Asian Nations (Asean) welcomed United States President Donald Trump‘s 20-point peace plan to end the ongoing Gaza conflict.
Speaking at the Asean-US Summit, Anwar said Trump‘s leadership could pave the way for “a just and durable peace” in Gaza and the world at large.
“On Gaza, we welcome your comprehensive plan to end the Gaza conflict.
“It has given the world a glimmer of hope that even in the most intractable conflicts, diplomacy and determination can prevail,” Anwar said at the summit at KL Convention Centre, here, today.
Last month, Trump announced his 20-point peace plan alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House, garnering support from his European counterparts and most of the Arab countries.
The plan, among others, seeks to designate Gaza as a deradicalised terror-free zone and for Hamas to decommission their weapons after returning all Israeli hostages, and to renounce any roles in the governance of Gaza.
So far, Hamas has released all living hostages and returned the remains of 15 out of 28 deceased hostages, as of October 22.
However, it has not conceded to any terms of disarmament or to relinquish control of the territory yet.
