KUALA LUMPUR: Joining Asean comes with a deep sense of responsibility and optimism, says Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmao.

He affirmed Timor-Leste’s commitment to contribute towards Asean’s goals of peace, prosperity and inclusivity, stressing that the country will work towards upholding Asean centrality.

Gusmao added that their accession reflects regional solidarity amidst global uncertainties.

“Our membership reflects enduring commitment towards regional cooperation, good governance and peaceful relations among nations.

“It also calls upon us to actively contribute towards Asean,” he told a press conference on the sidelines of the 47th Asean Summit and Related summits here on Sunday (Oct 26).

Gusmao added that the country’s accession as a full member of Asean also reflects a journey guided by Asean’s founding values, including mutual respect as well as unity in diversity.

“We are honoured to join Asean at a time where regional and global cooperation is more necessary than ever,” he said.

History was made earlier Sunday as Timor-Leste was admitted as Asean’s 11th member, with the signing of the admission declaration.

The landmark ceremony, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ibrahim as Asean chair, marks a defining moment in the region’s community building.
