KUALA LUMPUR: A group has gathered at Dataran Merdeka for the Himpunan Bantah rally to protest the Gaza genocide and show solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

The group began assembling at around 9.30am on Sunday (Oct 26).

They waved Palestinian flags and held placards calling for an end to violence while chanting “Free Palestine”.

Among those present were Amanah International Bureau chairman Raja Kamarul Bahrin Shah Raja Ahmad and activist Tian Chua, the former vice president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat.

Police personnel and officers were on hand to maintain order.

The rally was originally scheduled for Ampang Park, Jalan Ampang, but organisers shifted the location to Dataran Merdeka at the last minute.

Police had earlier advised against holding the gathering at Ampang Park for security reasons.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus said Ampang Park was unsuitable as it was situated about 50m from a red zone.

The red zone is an area actively used by officials for the 47th Asean Summit delegations.

“The public is reminded to abide by the law in line with the democratic values practised in our country to ensure public order and safety,” he said.

The protest coincides with the arrival of United States President Donald for the summit.
