Closure of Jalan Tun Sardon extended following new landslides

BALIK PULAU: Jalan Tun Sardon will remain closed after six new landslides were reported early this morning.

State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said the Public Works Department’s technical team has been deployed to the affected areas to conduct further assessments.

“Cleanup operations, which began yesterday, have been temporarily halted due to continuous heavy rain in the area.

“The road, originally scheduled to reopen at 6pm today, will now remain closed until further notice,” he said in a statement.

Authorities have cited safety concerns as the primary reason for the extended closure.

Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly and use alternative routes until the road is deemed safe for reopening.

It was reported yesterday that the site of the landslide along Jalan Tun Sardon here remained unsafe, with ongoing ground movement detected.

The critical slope failure, which occurred at Km5.10 of Jalan Tun Sardon around 4.50pm on Thursday, was a result of heavy rain and strong winds.

Meanwhile, as of noon, there are 1,029 flood victims from 280 families in the state housed in seven temporary flood relief centres throughout the state.
