KUALA LUMPUR: Asean leaders will deliberate various issues during the 47th Asean Summit and related summits, including reviewing the implementation of the Five-Point Consensus (5PC) on Myanmar, says the Foreign Ministry.
In a statement on Saturday (Oct 25), Wisma Putra said the 47th Asean Summit, chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, would be divided into the Plenary and Retreat sessions.
“During the Plenary session, discussions will focus on issues related to Asean Community-building and Asean’s external relations.
“During the Retreat session, Asean leaders will review the implementation of the 5PC, discuss the way forward in addressing the political and humanitarian crisis in Myanmar, as well as exchange views on regional and international issues of mutual concern,” it said.
The 5PC, agreed upon by Asean in 2021, outlines a roadmap for peace in Myanmar.
The opening ceremony of the 47th Asean Summit and related summits is scheduled to begin on Sunday (Oct 26) and conclude on Oct 28.
It will be attended by all Asean leaders, including the President and the Prime Minister of Timor-Leste, Guests of the Asean Chair, as well as other invited guests.
Among the high-profile arrivals expected at the event are United States President Donald Trump and Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
During the opening ceremony, the signing of the declaration on the admission of Timor-Leste into Asean will take place, marking its formal admission as the 11th Asean member state, said Wisma Putra.
More than 30 heads of state and government, including Asean leaders and key dialogue partners such as Australia and New Zealand, will then converge at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.
“Leaders will deliberate, among others, on ways to deepen regional integration, stimulate economic growth, and enhance Asean connectivity,” the statement added.
