Malaysia welcomes leaders from Timor-Leste and Finland ahead of Asean Summit

SEPANG, Oct 25 — World leaders continue to arrive in Malaysia yesterday for the 47th Asean Summit and Related Summits.

Among the dignitaries was Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta.

The aircraft carrying him touched down at the Bunga Raya Complex, Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), at 6.30pm and was received by Communications Minister Datuk Fadzil.

Earlier, Timor-Leste Prime Minister Kay Rala Xanana Gusmão arrived at 12.30pm, followed by Asean Secretary-General Dr Kao Kim Hourn at 6.57pm and Finland’s Foreign Minister, Elina Valtonen, at 10.20pm.

Malaysia, which holds the Asean chairmanship this year under the theme “Inclusivity and Sustainability”, will host the 47th Asean Summit from October 26 to 28 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

The summit will bring together Asean leaders and their dialogue partners, including the United States, , Japan and India (attending virtually), in what is expected to be the largest Asean gathering since the bloc’s founding in 1967.

This year marks Malaysia’s fifth time chairing Asean, following previous chairmanships in 1977, 1997, 2005 and 2015. — Bernama
