Around 700 people staged a protest outside the US embassy here this afternoon over president Donald Trump‘s expected visit to Malaysia for the 47th Asean Summit.
Amid heavy police presence, including the Federal Reserve Unit, the demonstrators were heard chanting “Reject Donald Trump”, with some carrying placards telling him to “go home”.
The participants, including several carrying Palestinian flags, also chanted “Long live Hezbollah” and “Long live Hamas”.
Former PKR MP Tian Chua, who was present, vowed to use the Asean forum to speak out against Israel’s war crimes in Gaza.
He urged rally-goers to attend the planned gathering on Sunday, the day Trump is expected to arrive in Malaysia.
On Sept 27, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim defended the decision to invite Trump to attend the summit, saying Malaysia will use diplomatic channels to continue voicing concerns over Palestine, including the atrocities in Gaza.
He said this in response to former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who urged the government to withdraw the invitation to Trump over Washington’s support for Israel’s actions in the conflict zone.
Earlier this month, Anwar again defended the decision to invite Trump, where he drew comparisons to Tunku Abdul Rahman’s diplomatic efforts to secure Malaya’s independence.
