KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 23 — Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attend the 47th Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur virtually this weekend, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said today.
Anwar said he received a phone call from Modi to discuss efforts to strengthen Malaysia-India bilateral ties to a more strategic and comprehensive level.
“He informed me that he will be attending virtually, as the Deepavali celebrations are still ongoing in India at that time,” Anwar said in a Facebook post.
He said India remains an important partner to Malaysia in trade and investment, as well as in technology, education and regional security cooperation.
Anwar added that Malaysia remains committed to enhancing Malaysia-India relations and deepening Asean-India cooperation towards a more peaceful and prosperous region.
The 47th Asean Summit will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from October 26 to 28, with Malaysia serving as this year’s Asean Chair.
US President Donald Trump is among several world leaders who has confirmed his attendance, Anwar said previously.
