KUALA LUMPUR: The construction of a new concrete wall along the Malaysia–Thailand border, particularly in high-risk areas, will be expedited to strengthen border control and safeguard national security.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa said the initiative included building the wall along vulnerable stretches such as from Chuping to Padang Besar in Perlis.
She said the plan aims to replace the ageing barbed-wire fencing, which has become easily breached.
“Under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the government has approved an allocation of RM327 million to implement new development projects and upgrade existing walls and security fences along the Malaysia–Thailand border.
“It will involve the states of Perlis, Kedah, and Perak, covering a total length of 110.7 kilometres, focusing on areas identified as suitable based on technical and security considerations,” she said in response to a question from Rushdan Rusmi (PN–Padang Besar) during a special chamber session in the Dewan Rakyat today.
In addition to building physical barriers, Dr Zaliha said the government also prioritised the welfare and readiness of security personnel stationed along the border.
“This includes improving basic facilities such as access to clean water at control posts.
“I acknowledge that the current supply and storage of clean water remain insufficient, forcing many outposts to rely on rainwater catchments or untreated river sources.
“For the first phase, RM20 million has been allocated under the Fifth Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP) for clean and treated water supply projects,” she said.
Dr Zaliha added that the government placed strong emphasis on improving basic infrastructure to ensure that border security personnel no longer faced such constraints.
“These upgrades, to be implemented in stages, will enhance the comfort, endurance, and preparedness of personnel in performing their duties to defend the nation’s sovereignty,” she said.
