PETALING JAYA:

Indian prime minister Narendra Modi will not be travelling to Kuala Lumpur for next week’s 47th Asean Summit after citing ongoing Deepavali celebrations in India.

Prime Minister Ibrahim said Modi conveyed his decision during a phone call last night, during which both leaders discussed efforts to strengthen Malaysia-India relations.

“Prime minister Modi informed me that he will be attending the summit virtually as the Deepavali celebrations in India will still be ongoing at that time,” said in a statement today.

“I respect his decision and conveyed my best wishes for a joyous Deepavali to him and the people of India.”

last night confirmed that Russian president Vladimir Putin will also not be attending the Asean Summit, with deputy prime minister Alexander Novak set to represent Putin.

Putin previously told Anwar he was “seriously considering” attending the regional gathering.

As Asean chair, Malaysia is set to host the 47th Asean Summit from Oct 26-28, with invitations extended to several world leaders.

Bernama reported that among the high-profile arrivals expected on Sunday are US president Donald and Chinese premier Li Qiang.
