KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 — The fireworks explosion that injured 22 people during a Deepavali celebration in Kulim on Monday was caused by the use of unauthorised pyrotechnics, according to preliminary investigations, the Home Ministry said today.

The ministry warned that firm action will be taken against any party found in breach of the law, including the revocation of approvals for licensed fireworks operators who fail to comply with regulations.

“The Home Ministry emphasised that the sale, possession and use of unapproved fireworks or firecrackers are prohibited under the Explosives Act 1957.” it said in a statement.

The case is being investigated under Section 8 of the Explosives Act 1957 and Section 326 of the Penal Code. Two individuals suspected of igniting the explosives without a valid permit have been arrested.

“The investigation covers elements of negligence, illegal possession and unauthorised handling of explosive materials,” it said.

The public and event organisers are reminded to prioritise safety and adhere to the guidelines set by the Home Ministry and the police.

The ministry said that, together with the police, it will continue to monitor the situation throughout the festive season and urges all parties to comply with the prevailing laws and regulations.

On Monday, 22 people were injured, including one man who suffered a serious forehead wound, following a fireworks explosion at Paya Besar near Kulim.

Kulim police chief Supt Zulkifli Azizan said the incident occurred around 12.45am when a large crowd had gathered along the road to watch fireworks.

He said one victim sustained a deep forehead wound measuring about five centimetres, while others suffered minor injuries.
