IPOH, Oct 22 —The Gunung Liang climbing site in South Perak has been closed to the public with immediate effect until further notice.

The closure order was issued by Perak Forestry Department director Datuk Mohd Basri Abdul Manaf.

The department, in a statement on its Facebook page last night, said the closure order, however, does not apply to its programmes, such as the Climbing Track Conservation Program in Permanent Forest Reserves.

“Under Section 47 of the National Forestry Act 1984 (Adoption) Enactment 1985, failure to comply with this order is an offence punishable by a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or imprisonment for up to three years, or both,” the statement read.

Mustaqqeem Mansoor, 34, was found dead at 3.30pm on Oct 16 at the peak of Gunung Liang Barat, near Tanjung Malim. He had joined 10 friends for a climb that began on Oct 10 from Bukit Fraser, Pahang, and was last seen on Oct 14.

His body was airlifted from the 1,933-metre summit using a Fire and Rescue Department Air Special Unit (PASKUB) AW189 helicopter at 2.45 pm on Oct 17.

A post-mortem conducted by Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh revealed that he had died from hypothermia.

As of Oct 19, police have recorded statements from eight individuals, including fellow climbers of the victim, to assist in the investigation into the incident. — Bernama
