MELAKA, Oct 22 — The body of a fully clothed man, whose identity has yet to be determined, was found floating in the Melaka River here on Monday.

Melaka Tengah district police chief ACP Christopher Patit said the victim, who was dressed in trousers and a shirt, is believed to be of Indian descent and was wearing a string bracelet. He was found floating face down in the river at about 4.45pm on Monday.

“Police received a call informing them that an object had been spotted floating in the Melaka River before the witness contacted the Melaka Hospital.

“The victim was lifted into a boat by staff from the Melaka River and Beach Development Corporation and members of the public, then brought to the riverbank where he was confirmed dead by a medical officer from the Melaka Hospital,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

Christopher said police had conducted an investigation into the victim’s body and the surrounding area and found no injuries or criminal elements on the man’s physique.

He said a post-mortem on the victim’s body conducted at 11pm on Monday determined the cause of death to be drowning.

He added that the victim’s body was still at the Melaka Hospital Forensic Department while awaiting the results of the fingerprint profile to identify his next of kin. — Bernama
