Wan Fayhsal is just frustrated about suspension, says Bersatu leader

Wan Fayhsal, who was suspended last week for violating the party’s constitution and code of conduct, had alleged that party president Muhyiddin Yassin had unilaterally spurned the king’s proposal to form a unity government following a hung Parliament in 2022.

The Machang MP said he was told by senior PAS and Bersatu leaders that Muhyiddin did not consult with the Perikatan Nasional Supreme Council about the proposal before making the decision.

However, Selangor Bersatu deputy chief Rafiq Abdullah said today that Muhyiddin would never decide on “huge matters” involving the opposition coalition on his own.

“I was then part of the Supreme Council. In matters such as this, he would discuss with Hadi and the other PN leaders,” he told FMT, referring to PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

“Wan Fayhsal should really check the facts before issuing statements. Such statements would only serve to compound matters.”

Rafiq said Wan Fayhsal had made this claim because of frustration at being suspended, and urged him to focus on his suspension appeal.

Following the outcome of the 15th general election which saw no party obtain a commanding majority, the then king, Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, proposed a unity government as a way out of the impasse.

However, PN declined to work with Pakatan Harapan.

This resulted in PH chairman Anwar Ibrahim being appointed as the 10th prime minister after obtaining the majority support to form the government with backing from Barisan Nasional, Gabungan Parti Sarawak, Gabungan Rakyat Sabah, Warisan, and others.

Separately, Bersatu Youth chief Hilman Idham said PN decided to reject the proposal to form a unity government after discussing with fellow components and on the basis of not wanting to work with DAP.

“There were negotiations between PN and BN at St Regis Kuala Lumpur. But BN then decided to collaborate with PH,” he said.
