JOHOR BARU: predicts the next Johor election and the 16th General Election will take place by the end of next year.

Johor commissioner Datuk Dr Mahfodz Mohamed said the party received information on a possible simultaneous state and general election after Hari Raya Aidiladha in May.

“We received information that DAP requested the Prime Minister to hold GE16 simultaneously with the Johor election by the end of next year,” he said.

“It is good if true because it can save costs,” added Mahfodz on Saturday (Oct 18).

He spoke at a press conference after chairing the state meeting.

Mahfodz said Johor has yet to decide how many seats it will contest.

He hopes for at least 15 state seats and four parliamentary seats.

“That was our status quo, but we will ask for more,” he said.

He said they are confident based on cooperation with Bersatu under Perikatan Nasional.

“We will also reach out to non Muslims, not just voters, but also parties such as and MCA, other than . We want as many friends as possible going into battle,

but we will not befriend ‘extreme’ parties like DAP,” he added.

In May, Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi dismissed speculation of an early state election.

He reaffirmed the state government’s term will end in about two years and reportedly said it is not election season yet, as the administration remains in office until April 2027.

In the 2022 Johor state election, Barisan Nasional won 40 of the 56 seats.

Pakatan Harapan secured 12, with DAP winning 10 and and Amanah one each.

Perikatan won three seats, two by Bersatu and one by PAS.

The Malaysian United Democratic Alliance also won one seat.
