KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 — Sixteen individuals, comprising current and former bank officers arrested under the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s (MACC) Op Sky in January, are facing corruption charges this month for allegedly approving personal loans through a financial consultancy firm.

The MACC has reportedly obtained clearance to prosecute the cases in stages, with two officers charged in the Kuala Lumpur Court yesterday and four former officers brought before the court today.

In total, 349 charges are expected to be filed, involving a sum approaching RM2 million.

“The charges will also be filed in several other states, including at the Seremban Sessions Court in Negeri Sembilan, the Shah Alam Sessions Court in , and the Kota Kinabalu Sessions Court in Sabah,” a source was quoted as saying.

The source also said the suspects had allegedly accepted bribes to process and approve loan applications from clients linked to the consultancy firm, allowing some to secure multiple loans beyond their eligibility.

The suspects are being charged under Section 16(a)(A) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act 2009.
