KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 17 — A classmate of 16-year-old Yap Shing Xuen, who was fatally stabbed at a school in Bandar Utama, has recounted her final moments, revealing that she had asked to go to the toilet during an examination and never returned.

The classmate, who wished to be identified only as Adam, was speaking to reporters after attending Yap’s wake service at the Nirvana Center in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

Adam, 15, said Yap had left their third-floor classroom to go to the girls’ toilet on the ground floor.

When she did not return after about 20 minutes, the teacher went to check and spotted the knife-wielding suspect in the school’s assembly compound, acting strangely.

“We were then told to immediately close the doors and were forbidden from leaving,” he said, adding that the suspect’s elder brother and several teachers later managed to restrain him.

Saddened by the loss, Adam remembered Yap, whom he had known since Form One, as a “very caring, always polite and helpful” person.

He also confirmed that neither he nor Yap knew the suspect personally.

He added that he has not attended school for the past two days due to the trauma of the incident.

In the Oct 14 incident, Yap died from multiple stab wounds to the chest and neck after allegedly being attacked by a 14-year-old schoolmate in the girls’ toilet.

The suspect was later arrested and is currently under police remand.
