JOHOR BAHRU, Oct 16 — A freak traffic accident involving multiple cars left a trail of destruction along a row of shophouses in Jalan Kuning in Taman Pelangi here today.
A total of six cars were damaged, with one landing on top of a parked vehicle.
There was also minor damage to a shop’s signage in the incident that happened at 9.14am.
Johor Baru South police chief Assistant Commissioner Raub Selamat said initial investigations revealed that the incident was triggered after a Mini Cooper car lost control.
“The Mini Cooper, driven by a 49-year-old woman, had earlier failed to slow down at an intersection and the driver had inadvertently stepped on the accelerator instead.
“This caused the car to accelerate and crashed into the five parked cars,” he said in a statement today.
Earlier, social media was abuzz with images of the incident.
Based on video footage posted on social media, the Mini Cooper was seen on top of a Mazda sports utility vehicle (SUV) while partially pinned by a shop’s signage.
A Proton Gen.2 involved in the incident had its roofline partially torn off.
Raub said there were no casualties or injuries despite the impact that the accident caused.
“A test on the driver also returned negative for alcohol abuse,” he said.
Police are investigating the case under Rule 10(1) of the Road Traffic Rules 1959 (LN 166/59), which makes it an offence to fail to exercise due control over a vehicle.
