Here’s what caused the power outages across Klang Valley and Johor

Several areas in Peninsular Malaysia had faced a major power outage this afternoon which affected major malls, commercial buildings and traffic lights. As highlighted by Malay Mail, they were outages reported across the Klang Valley, Johor Bharu, Kluang, Tampin, Melaka, Ipoh, Kuantan and Sendayan.

According to the latest update from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), they have fully restored electricity supply as of 5:54pm.

To recap, TNB initially announced an electricity power supply disruption in several parts of Kepong in Kuala Lumpur. Eventually, it updated that the power outage also affected more areas across the Klang Valley and Johor Bahru.

TNB has confirmed that the source of the power disruption came from the Edra Power Plant in Melaka.

Edra Power Holdings Sdn Bhd (Edra) is an independent power producer (IPP) and according to their website, it has a portfolio of 8 power and desalination plants across 4 countries which include the UAE, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Malaysia. It has a total installed capacity of 7,684MW and an effective capacity of 5,042MW.

Edra was formed in 2014 via the consolidation of 3 major IPPs which include Powertek Energy Group, KLPP Group and Jimah Energy Group. Since 2016, Edra became a subsidiary of General Nuclear Power Corporation (CGN) after the successful acquisition of its operating companies and subsidiaries.

In Malaysia, Edra has a total of 5 power plants located at Jimah, Telok Gong, Kuala Langat, Kuala Ketil and Alor Gajah.

The Edra Melaka plant at Alor Gajah is a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant that generates 2,242MW. It is 100% owned by the CGN EDRA Group under its subsidiary Edra Energy Sdn Bhd.
