SEPANG, Oct 14 — Road Transport Department (JPJ) enforcers have arrested a man for offering illegal car hire services to an international traveller at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 1.

The arrest followed surveillance and intelligence operations by the KLIA Enforcement Station targeting unlicensed transport activities.

JPJ said the suspect, who was driving a Toyota Alphard, had offered to take an Egyptian passenger to Bukit Bintang for RM200, payable upon arrival.

The vehicle and its driver were detained for further investigation into illegal taxi operations.

“Any person found guilty under Section 205(1) of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 may face a fine of up to RM50,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both,” JPJ said.

The department added that those who aid or abet such offences could also be charged under Section 243(1) of the same Act.

JPJ urged travellers to use only licensed transport services available at designated counters or through e-hailing applications.

Last month, a tourist was charged RM836 for an unlicensed taxi ride from KLIA to Kuala Lumpur.
