The higher education ministry is allowing public higher education institutions to offer online or hybrid classes from Oct 16 to Oct 24 for students and lecturers celebrating Deepavali.
In a statement, the ministry said this flexibility applies to all public universities, polytechnics and community colleges to enable Hindu students and staff to celebrate the festival at home with their families.
The ministry said the decision was made following discussions with relevant departments and agencies, and in line with efforts to promote inclusivity and harmony within Malaysia’s multiracial society.
“However, its implementation will depend on the suitability and academic requirements of each institution to ensure that overall academic activities are not disrupted,” it said.
The ministry also extended its Deepavali greetings to all students, academic staff and Malaysians of the Hindu faith, wishing them joy, peace and prosperity during the festival.
Deepavali falls on Oct 20 this year.
