PETALING JAYA:

The four Form 5 students allegedly involved in the gang rape of a Form 3 girl at a school in Melaka have been expelled.

Education director-general Azam Ahmad said the decision was reached by the school’s disciplinary board which met today, reported Berita Harian.

The suspects allegedly committed the offence on the 15-year-old victim at about 2.50pm on Oct 2 while she was headed to her classroom to collect something she had left behind.

Two of the suspects reportedly watched and recorded the incident with their handphones, and the videos they took were later circulated online.

The four boys were remanded until Oct 16 to assist investigations under Section 375(b) of the Penal Code for gang rape.

The education ministry was criticised after stating that the four boys would be allowed to sit for their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia examination next month.

Law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said said the fact that the suspects were under 18 years old did not exempt them from facing action.

She said rape was a criminal offence, and that charges against the suspects could be filed in separate courts depending on the offenders’ age group at the time of the incident.
