PETALING JAYA:

Dr Zakir Naik is demanding RM10 million in damages from a news portal based in India and its journalist over a report suggesting that he may be suffering from HIV.

In a letter of demand, Naik, said that the report had tarnished his image and reputation as well as it had given the impression that he had contracted HIV or engaged in activities that led to him being infected.

The report had also led to Naik being ridiculed.

Naik’s letter of demand comes a month after the controversial preacher denied that he had been diagnosed with AIDS, contrary to claims making the rounds on social media.

He decried the news as “rubbish” and “fake news” when responding to claims that he had been diagnosed with the deadly disease and was currently being treated at a private hospital in the Klang Valley.

Naik had also described the claims as “hate speech” spread by irresponsible people.
