KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 6 — Perak has fully recovered from the floods following the closure of its last temporary relief centre (PPS), while Kedah has recorded a decrease in the number of evacuees.

In Perak, the PPS at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Matang in Taiping, which housed evacuees from the Larut, Matang and Selama (LMS) district, has been closed as weather conditions improved and floodwaters fully receded.

According to a statement from the State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) secretariat, 23 peple from six families sheltering at the PPS were allowed to return home after authorities confirmed that their homes were safe.

Meanwhile, the number of flood evacuees in Kedah has decreased to 158 people from 48 families as of 4 pm today, compared with 164 victims from 51 families earlier this morning.

Kedah Civil Defence Force (APM) deputy director Major (PA) Muhammad Suhaimi Mohd Zain said all evacuees were still being housed at the two PPS opened last Friday and Sunday.

“SK Langgar is currently housing 115 people from 34 families from Mukim Langgar and Mukim Limbong, while the PPS at Dewan Serbaguna Pokok Sena is accommodating 43 people from 14 families from Mukim Gajah Mati, Mukim Lesong, Mukim Jabi and Mukim Tualang.

“The number of victims at Dewan Serbaguna Pokok Sena shows a downward trend, while SK Langgar has seen an increase,” he said in a statement, adding that weather conditions in the state were reported to be fine.

Muhammad Suhaimi said the water level of Sungai Kedah at the Highway Bridge in Kota Setar was 1.92 metres, surpassing the warning level of 1.8 metres, while in Ampang Jajar under the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (MADA), it stood at 1.1 metres, above the alert level of 0.88 metres.

Kedah APM director Lt Col (PA) Mohd Bukhori Mat Sidik reportedly said that 18 locations in the state have been identified as being at risk of flooding if the high tide phenomenon, expected from tomorrow until Friday, coincides with heavy rainfall.

He said the locations involved five districts, namely Kuala Muda, Kota Setar, Kubang Pasu, Yan and Langkawi. — Bernama
