KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 5 — Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing has clarified that Tourism Malaysia was not responsible for serving alcohol at a recent Gala Dinner held during the Global Travel Meet.

In a statement today, Tiong said the catering was organised by the private sector and not part of Tourism Malaysia’s official programme, adding that the agency’s role was limited to launching the Visit Malaysia 2026 events calendar at the same venue.

“Tourism Malaysia did not provide food or beverages during the dinner. It was hosted by our partners from the tourism industry,” he said.

The minister said the Global Travel Meet generated an estimated RM420 million in economic impact and was aimed at promoting Malaysia as a preferred destination ahead of Visit Malaysia 2026.

Tiong stressed that the ministry would continue engaging with industry players to attract international arrivals while respecting local customs and sensitivities.

He also reminded all parties not to politicise the issue, noting that the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion in Malaysia.

Earlier, Masjid Tanah MP Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin had questioned the serving of alcohol at the dinner, saying it was inappropriate for an event involving a government agency.

Her remarks sparked debate on social media, prompting the ministry to issue its clarification.

Tiong reiterated that collaboration between the government and private sector remains crucial to ensuring the success of Visit Malaysia 2026.

He also urged Mas Ermieyati to focus on efforts that boost tourism, strengthen the economy, and enhance Malaysia’s image globally rather than amplifying minor misunderstandings.

“YB Masjid Tanah also has a responsibility to promote tourism in the country, particularly in the areas you represent,” he added.
