KUALA LUMPUR:

Former chief Noh Omar said the party should object to the Urban Renewal Bill instead of merely calling for it to be deferred.

Noh said any proposed legislation must be approved by the Cabinet first before it is tabled in the Dewan Rakyat.

The former entrepreneur development and cooperatives minister said if “one or two” ministers disagreed with the proposed law, the bill could not be brought to Parliament.

“There are seven ministers from in the current Cabinet. They must adamantly reject it and not seek its postponement,” he said at an anti-Urban Renewal Bill gathering here today.

It was reported yesterday that a convention on urban redevelopment adopted three major resolutions, including one calling for the government to postpone tabling the bill pending a comprehensive redraft to incorporate the views of all stakeholders.

The Urban Renewal Convention also suggested amendments to 10 existing laws that relate to urban planning and redevelopment.

Umno vice-president Johari Ghani, who heads the party’s special task force on the bill, said the initial draft contained too many gaps, leaving it unable to provide homeowners with comprehensive protection.

Noh, who was sacked by Umno in 2023, however, still appreciated the efforts by the party to defer the tabling of the bill.

secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan also praised Umno over its stance on the bill, and pledged to reject it by any means necessary.

“However, it would be the rakyat who determines if the bill is rejected,” he said.
