Bersatu may be a relatively young party, but it has benefitted from party president Muhyiddin Yassin’s experience and steady hand in navigating political storms, says vice-president Ahmad Faizal Azumu.
Faizal, also known as Peja, said Bersatu had endured many painful tests, including members who strayed due to pressure or enticements.
“Leaders may come and go, but the struggle remains. Bersatu continues to grow, and its membership nationwide has reached an encouraging number,” he said in a statement today.
“The party’s age is not an obstacle to making major decisions with the leadership of the experienced Muhyiddin.”
The former Tambun MP also said Bersatu would rise from its current difficulties and remain focussed on fighting for the people, particularly in addressing the economic burdens caused by what he called the government’s weaknesses.
“With the tireless efforts of our leaders at all levels, Bersatu will rise again, stronger and more successful.
“Bersatu will lead the nation and steer the lives of the people towards a better future,” he said.
His comments come amid growing turmoil in Bersatu following allegations by Supreme Council member Wan Saiful Wan Jan that secretary-general Azmin Ali and information chief Tun Faisal Ismail Aziz had threatened division leaders allegedly linked to a plot to oust Muhyiddin as president.
Wan Saiful insisted that the collection of signatures from division chiefs was not aimed at pushing Muhyiddin out, but to oppose discussions on the party’s prime ministerial candidate at its annual general meeting (AGM) on Sept 9.
Muhyiddin had said during the AGM that some quarters were collecting signatures to oust him.
