KUALA LUMPUR: The Professional Advancement in Trucking and Haulage (PATH) initiative was recently launched at the state level in Penang, marking a major step forward in Malaysia’s efforts to create new job opportunities and strengthen the nation’s logistics workforce.
With an allocation of RM2.5mil by the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), the PATH initiative is a strategic programme developed by the Human Resources Ministry (Kesuma) through the HRD Corp and the Transport Ministry (MOT).
The initiative aims to address one of the key challenges in Malaysia’s logistics industry, which is the shortage of competent lorry drivers by bridging skills gaps among existing workers, providing opportunities for upskilling and professional growth, and creating employment opportunities for Malaysians.
Malaysia currently faces a shortfall of approximately over 4,000 licensed drivers despite having over 16,000 registered prime movers nationwide. This shortage hampers efficiency, delays supply chains and increases operational costs across industries.
The PATH initiative aims to train 1,000 participants, including existing logistics industry workers and unemployed Malaysians as part of a pilot programme implemented across major ports in Penang, Selangor Johor and Pahang.
The initiative focuses on equipping participants with industry-recognised upskilling certifications, including commercial driving licenses (License E and GDL E Bersendi), advanced defensive driving skills, as well as safety and compliance 1 training. This will not only enhance their employability and income potential but also improve road safety nationwide by instilling prudent driving practices.
Held at the Penang Port Headquarters in Butterworth, Penang, the launch ceremony was graced by Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook and Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong.
It was also attended by HRD Corp board chairman Datuk Abu Huraira Abu Yazid, its board member Datuk Seri Chan Kong Yew, HRD Corp chief executive Dr Syed Alwi Mohamed Sultan and leaders from Malaysia’s logistics sector, industry players and stakeholders.
As of Sept 15, RM1.26mil has already been committed, with training sessions actively underway in Penang, Selangor and Johor, while Pahang is scheduled to commence soon.
PATH was first introduced in 2024 at Port Klang, where 200 drivers successfully obtained their licences and certifications.
Beyond training, PATH is also expected to narrow the driver shortage gap nationwide, improve efficiency and competitiveness of Malaysia’s logistics sector, enhance road safety and reduce accident risks as well as create better job opportunities.
