PASIR GUDANG, Oct 1 — The Johor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) is conducting a follow-up operation after a chemical odour incident was reported at a factory on Jalan Platinum here last night.

The Johor JBPM Operations Centre, in a statement, said a call about the incident was received at 11.11pm, after which a team from the Pasir Gudang Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) and personnel from the hazardous material (HAZMAT) unit of Larkin BBP were deployed and arrived at the scene at 11.16pm.

“Upon arriving at the scene, the operational response team confirmed that a chemical odour pollution incident had occurred at the factory, involving three victims,” it said.

The department said that all three victims had been handed to the Ministry of Health Malaysia (KKM) before the fire and rescue team reached the scene.

It added that the Hazmat team had carried out a thorough inspection and monitoring of the factory premises to ensure there was no further risk of pollution and that the area was safe.

For a periodic inspection, three rescue team members and a factory technician entered the premises, fully equipped with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), one Gas Mate unit, and two GFG gas detector units.

Monitoring results showed that hydrogen sulphide gas levels were at 8.9 ppm.

The team also carried out ventilation using a special fan provided by the factory, followed by fogging with an auxiliary duct flow covering an area of 10 by 10 square metres.

The operation, involving 13 personnel, concluded at 3.37am after air quality readings in the area returned to normal. — Bernama
