GEORGE TOWN:

Penang has backed a proposal by a Gerakan leader for the latter to use its own logo to contest in the state in the next general election.

Calling it a winning strategy, Penang PAS information chief Fawwaz Jan said every party had the right to craft its own election strategies and the Islamic party would respect Gerakan’s stance on how to present itself to voters in Penang and the country.

“Penang PAS welcomes any move that may increase public confidence as long as Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) component parties uphold (mutual) understanding, unity and the direction of our struggle.

“Plus, the use of party logos proved to be an effective ‘weapon’ in several states in the 15th general election,” Fawwaz said in a statement.

The Permatang Pauh MP also said despite the use of different logos in the election, partners in PN would remain unified by the primary goals of promoting good governance and rejecting “narrow politics”, among others.

“PAS will continue working closely with Gerakan and all parties in PN to ensure the people’s aspirations in both Penang and Malaysia are realised,” he said.

Previously, Penang Gerakan Youth chief Tan Zhen Zune called for his party to rethink its election strategy in the state after having lost twice under the PN banner.

Tan suggested that Gerakan might need to contest under its own flag again.
