PETALING JAYA:

An animal rights group has urged those who witnessed the bludgeoning of a dog in Ipoh, Perak, to lodge reports with the police and the department of veterinary services (DVS) after a video of the incident went viral.

The 90-second video shows a man chasing after a dog and hitting it with a metal rod.

A woman is also seen trying to stop the man, but to no avail. The video then cuts to a scene in which the dog is lying on a table and bleeding profusely.

Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM) said the perpetrator is believed to be a son of the dog’s owner.

“The dog died,” it said in a Facebook post.

The association urged the authorities to investigate the matter under the Animal Welfare Act 2015 for killing of animals.

It said they must act swiftly against those responsible.

“We need to make it clear that animal abuse cannot be tolerated,” it said.
