SEPANG: The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) mission will enter the Yellow Zone soon and will face high risk of being intercepted by Israeli forces, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
The Communications Minister said he was given an update of all 47 ships and 34 Malaysians in the mission by the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations chief executive officer Datuk Dr Sani Araby Abdul Alim Araby at the Sumud Nusantara operations centre here on Sunday (Sept 28).
Based on previous missions, Fahmi said there was a record of Israel harassing ships entering the Yellow Zone, which starts 300 nautical miles from Gaza and it is highly likely the flotilla may be intercepted.
“Given that there have been incidents in Tunisia and several incidents of disruption, we can expect there will also be incidents in the Yellow Zone,” he said at a press conference after receiving a briefing on the mission.
Fahmi said the government, through the Foreign Ministry, is constantly monitoring the mission’s progress to ensure the safety of all Malaysians involved.
He said the government is giving its full support to the GSF and Sumud Nusantara initiatives.
“We are in a very historic moment where the world will no longer remain silent and allow the illegal state of Israel and the Zionist regime to do whatever they want,” he said.
During his visit, Fahmi received a briefing on the current status of the mission and made a video call with the seven Malaysians involved.
The GSF’s voyage across the Mediterranean Sea is to bring food supplies, medicine and a message of peace urging that war and the famine crisis stop, in addition to demanding the opening of a humanitarian corridor to Gaza. – Bernama
