A PKR leader has called on the party’s machinery to intensify efforts in countering fake news on social media, noting that the opposition had relied on disinformation to erode public confidence in the government.
Melaka PKR chief Shamsul Iskandar Akin said there was a need to step up such efforts in view of a state election, which is expected to be held next year.
“When we formed the government, we observed that the opposition spread lies after lies on social media.
“Which is why we need to work harder and turn social media into a battlefield by adopting the latest approaches, with the help of the latest tech such as artificial intelligence,” he said at the party’s 27th Reformasi anniversary celebration in Melaka today.
Also present were PKR president Anwar Ibrahim, secretary-general Fuziah Salleh and central leadership council member Adam Adli.
Shamsul praised Anwar‘s work ethics despite being 78 years old.
He said Anwar had been in Sandakan, Sabah, in the morning and had chaired a meeting in Melaka in the afternoon.
On Friday, he had been in Putrajaya in the morning before travelling to Kota Kinabalu in the evening.
“When does he rest, or sleep? If he can work assiduously, we must work even harder,” he said.
Shamsul also said the push for reforms could not solely depend on the party leadership, but also on its machinery.
“We need to be friends of reform. We need to be united in this cause,” he said.
The term of the Melaka legislative assembly is set to end in November next year.
