PUTRAJAYA: The Putrajaya monorail bridge, which has been abandoned for over 20 years, will be repurposed as a pedestrian walkway and cycling path starting January 2026, says Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa (pic).
“Since my appointment as the minister responsible for the Federal Territories, one of the most common suggestions I’ve received from the public has been to repurpose the monorail bridge.
“Alhamdulillah, after 20 years, and under the Madani government, this issue has finally been resolved. The bridge will soon become a popular attraction for tourists to enjoy the stunning views of Putrajaya Lake,” the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Federal Territories) said in a speech at the Putrajaya Carnival 2025 here Saturday (Sept 27).
The text of her speech was delivered by the Putrajaya Corporation (PPj) president, Datuk Fadlun Mak Ujud.
On the Moroccan Pavilion at the Botanical Gardens in Presint 1, Dr Zaliha said she has instructed the Federal Territories Department (JWP) and PPj to come up with new ideas to enhance its function without altering the existing structure.
“This is part of implementing the ‘Baukultur’ (building culture) concept, inspired by my recent visit to Italy. We are working on these initiatives to attract more visitors to Putrajaya, which will, in turn, positively impact the local economy,” she said.
Meanwhile, Fadlun told reporters that the government has allocated RM15mil for the upgrade of the long-abandoned bridge, transforming it into a recreational path for pedestrians and cyclists, adding that the project is progressing steadily and is now halfway complete.
“Work is currently underway and is expected to be completed by December. Only the bridge connection, ramp, and finishing touches remain.”
He said the 200m bridge would be limited to bicycles only, as its original load capacity was designed for a monorail system.
The Putrajaya Carnival 2025, formerly known as the Putrajaya Community Carnival and Water Festival, has been rebranded with a refreshed line-up featuring community, sports, culture, lifestyle, and urban sustainability, in line with efforts to position Putrajaya as a progressive and liveable city.
Held at the Presint 18 Futsal Complex, the two-day carnival kicked off Saturday with more than 60 activities lined up, including a community feast, dance performances, and recreational and leisure events. – Bernama
