IPOH: The Election Commission (EC) will consider all factors before deciding on any election date.
Perak Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said he believes the EC will make sensible decisions based on current situations and expenditure.
“We all understand that it is the task of the EC to manage elections,” he said on Saturday (Sept 27).
“Normally, they will consider suggestions from political parties and make a final decision,” he added.
“The EC will consider many things, including the costs of a large election or the possibility of floods,” he said.
He was responding to a proposal by DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke for the 16th General Election to be held concurrently with state elections in Peninsular Malaysia.
Loke said the proposal should be seriously considered to reduce costs and align electoral terms.
The Sabah state assembly will automatically dissolve at midnight on Nov 11 after which an election has to be called within 60 days.
The next state election is believed to be Melaka, followed by Sarawak and then Johor.
Saarani said he would not directly comment on Loke’s proposal, noting it was the Transport Minister’s prerogative as party secretary-general.
He added that any comments from Umno would come from party president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
