KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 26 — assemblyman Mohd Shafie Ngah has issued an unconditional public apology to Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan, resolving a defamation lawsuit filed by the DAP lawmaker.

Shafie acknowledged that his statements had falsely suggested Syahredzan was not a sincere and devout Muslim, and that he supported communist ideology.

The settlement was recorded as a consent judgment at the High Court here on Sept 22, 2025.

As part of the settlement, Shafie also confirmed he had violated an interim injunction issued by the High Court on Feb 19, 2024, which had already barred him from making similar defamatory statements.

“Accordingly, I hereby unconditionally retract these statements in full, and give an unconditional and express undertaking not to make or publish any further defamatory or potentially defamatory statements about YB Syahredzan in any form or manner,” Shafie stated in the tendered apology.

“I take full responsibility for my actions and am committed to ensuring that I will act with greater care, respect, and integrity in the future,” the lawmaker added.

The case originated from defamatory remarks Mohd Shafie made during Perikatan Nasional events in October 2022 and July 2023, which were broadcast on social media and covered by mainstream media.

Syahredzan, who also serves as political secretary to DAP veteran Tan Sri Lim Kit Siang, was represented by lawyers Daniel Albert, Nicholas Yap, and Amanda Yap from Daniel & Wong.

“With this settlement, and once the terms of the settlement have been fully complied with, there should no longer be any personal dispute between myself and YB Ustaz Shafie,” Syahredzan said in a post announcing the settlement.
