KUCHING, Sept 26 — Sarawak will continue to press for its rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) until every promise enshrined in the agreement and the Federal Constitution is fully restored, said Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
He said while some rights had been returned through administrative measures, they must be restored through amendments to the Federal Constitution to ensure they cannot be revoked in the future.
“Under MA63, an agreement was made between the Federal and state governments. As long as what was granted to us is already in the Federal Constitution, it should be implemented according to the agreement, what has not been implemented should be put into effect..
“However, over the years, some rights granted through the constitution, such as those related to tourism and the environment, have been taken away. To me, we must continue to fight until all the promises made to us are fulfilled,” he said during the Syarahan Negarawan 2025 question-and-answer session at Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) today.
At the event, he delivered a 90-minute lecture titled “Perjanjian Malaysia 1963: Kunci Keharmonian Persekutuan”, emphasising the critical role of MA63 as the foundation for Malaysia’s federal harmony.
The event drew participants from diverse backgrounds, including academics, state leaders, students and members of the public.
The programme also served as a platform to foster patriotism and nation-building values among the younger generation through intellectual discourse and open dialogue. — Bernama
