BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police have detained a senior citizen over the murder of an elderly man near a hut in Cherok Tokun here on Sunday.

Seberang Prai Tengah police chief Assistant Commissioner Helmi Aris said the 70-year-old suspect was arrested about 11pm yesterday in front of a coffee shop in Machang Bubok.

“A remand application for the suspect was made at the magistrate’s court in Bukit Mertajam.

“The man will be remanded until May 6 for further investigation.

“With this arrest, police have solved the murder of a man who was found dead at a hut in Cherok Tokun, Bukit Mertajam, on Sunday.”

It was reported that before the incident, the victim and five friends, including the 70-year-old suspect, were chatting at the hut.

It understood that the suspect suddenly attacked the victim from behind with a stick until he collapsed.

The suspect allegedly took out a knife and stabbed the victim, then fled the scene.

It is believed that the incident was caused by a misunderstanding between the victim and the suspect that began three days prior.
