Penang Showcases Over RM5 Bln In Projects At World Expo 2025 In Osaka

GEORGE TOWN, Sept 24 (Bernama) — Penang, through the Penang Development Corporation (PDC), is showcasing development projects worth over RM5 billion at the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, as part of its efforts to attract foreign investment.

Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow, who is leading a delegation of key state agencies to Japan, said the featured projects include the Penang International Logistics Aeropark (PILA), a world-class healthcare hub known as Medi-City in Bandar Cassia and the RM9.8 billion seaside promenade project, Penang Linear Waterfront.

“Additionally, we are highlighting the Batu Kawan Industrial Park 3 (BKIP3), dedicated to semiconductors, medical devices, and automation; a sustainable RM839 million waterfront project called The Coast and GBS at Technoplex, which aims to expand our global business services and digital ecosystem.

“These represent more than RM5 billion in development under PDC’s 2024-2028 strategic plan,” he said during an online press conference after launching “Penang Week” at the Malaysia Pavilion in Osaka today.

As Malaysia’s leading hub for semiconductors and integrated circuit (IC) design, Chow said Penang is also showcasing three homegrown integrated circuit (IC) design leaders, which are Tenasic, SiliconX, and SkyeChip.

The chief minister noted that Japan remains one of Penang’s top eight export destinations, with trade reaching RM14 billion in 2024 and already recording RM8.3 billion in the first seven months of 2025.

“We are also home to about 3,500 Japanese expatriates, investors and retirees who have made Penang their second home.

“In 2023 alone, Penang attracted over RM1 billion in manufacturing investments from Japan, creating more than 500 jobs,” he highlighted.

Earlier, PDC signed two memorandums of understanding (MoU) with major global logistics companies, Federal Express Services (M) Sdn Bhd (FedEx) and DHL Express (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. This marks an important step toward solidifying commitments for the PILA initiative, which aims to enhance Penang’s status as a regional air cargo and logistics hub.

The PDC is currently collaborating with Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) to finalise the investment framework, and the project’s gross development cost is estimated at around RM0.8 billion.

“FedEx and DHL are strategic partners in setting up PILA, and the Penang delegation will also be visiting the Kansai Logistics Park to learn best practices,” said Chow.

Additionally, an MoU worth RM120 million was signed between local companies Solar Voltech Sdn Bhd (SVSB), Atlantic Blue Sdn Bhd (ABSB) and Japan’s Shizen International Inc to strengthen Penang’s foothold in renewable energy initiatives.
