KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 23 (Bernama) — On its 24th day, the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) convoy, which began its voyage from Barcelona, is now nearing its journey towards Gaza.
Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (MAPIM Malaysia) activist Zulfadhli Khiruddin, who joined the humanitarian mission, said the group was currently between Greek and Libyan waters, with nearly 58 vessels of various sizes expected to rendezvous with the final group departing from Greece within the next 24 hours.
“Our hope is to continue receiving support, and we ask for prayers that our main objective of breaking the blockade on Gaza will succeed,” he said in a video update.
Zulfadhli also said the group was on high alert as they drew closer to the critical zone.
He added that members on board the mission conducted training drills several times daily to prepare for any potential Zionist threats or other contingencies.
The GSF voyage across the Mediterranean Sea, carrying food, medicine and a message of peace, is scheduled to reach Gaza waters by the end of this month, involving more than 1,000 volunteers aboard nearly 70 boats with a single goal — to break the blockade on Gaza.
All Malaysian volunteers are sailing under the banner of Sumud Nusantara, led by Cinta Gaza Malaysia chief executive officer Muhammad Nadir Al-Nuri Kamaruzaman.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is the patron of Sumud Nusantara, which involves Malaysia, Indonesia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Maldives, the Philippines and Thailand.
GSF brings together an international coalition from Europe, Asia, South Africa, Latin America and the Middle East, with all delegations emphasising non-violence and the role of the flotilla as a symbol of global solidarity with the Gaza crisis.
