JOHOR BAHRU Sept 23 — In an effort to better promote the National Integrated Immigration System (NIISe) passport-free border crossing for Singaporeans, the Johor government has implemented QR code specific routes and information dissemination to overcome the low take-up numbers.

Johor Public Works, Transport and Infrastructure Committee chairman Mohamad Fazli Mohamad Salleh said there were issues arising in the initial stage, including the number of users that were still low as well as some who were less skilled in using the MyNIISe app.

“To overcome this, the authorities have opened Zones B1–B4 and hybrid routes in Zones B5–B8, in addition to adding banners and signages as a guide for users.

“The authorities will also intensify the distribution of leaflets, pictorial guides and videos as part of the initiative,” he said in a statement today.

Mohamad Fazli said the improvements was based on the initial feedback from his visit during the start of the passport-free QR code immigration clearance trial at Johor land checkpoints yesterday.

In addition, the Bukit Pasir assemblyman added that there were also complaints from SingTel network users regarding registration problems with the MyNIISe app.

“The issue is also being looked into together with NIISe and HeiTech Padu, including wifh a working visit to Singapore,” he said.

Mohamad Fazli said the modernisation measures are believed to be able to reduce congestion at the Johor-Singapore border crossings and provide a more comfortable travel experience for users.

“Despite facing initial challenges, Johor remains committed to ensuring this initiative is successful.

“We want the people to experience the benefits and I urge the public to download the MyNIISe app and try this facility,” he said.

MyNIISE app smoothens journeys

The MyNIISe app, that is currently limited to only passenger cars, is open not only to Malaysians and Singaporeans but also to foreigners. Travelers from 63 countries can use the QR code to enter Malaysia, while citizens of 71 countries can use it for departure.

For usage of the passport-free immigration clearance, first time foreign users will need to create an account on the MyNIISe app that can be downloaded on the Google Play Store or App Store of their respective mobile phones.

Upon downloading the MyNIISe app, they are required to create an account, with additional l steps including scanning their passport photo page and passport biometric data chip via Near Field Communication (NFC).

This process includes taking a selfie of the user.

Since yesterday, Malaysia has started a trial run of its NIISe app based passport-free immigration clearance, allowing Malaysians, Singaporeans and selected foreign travellers to use QR codes for passport-less immigration clearance.

A total of 28 car lanes have been specially allocated to implemented the QR code passport-free immigration clearance on both land border crossings at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar (BSI) Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex in Johor Bahru and the Sultan Abu Bakar CIQ Complex (KSAB) at the Second Link Crossing in Gelang Patah.

For the BSO CIQ, 16 car lanes – eight for entry and eight for exit – have been fitted with the system, while KSAB has 12 car lanes – six each for entry and exit – are in operation.

The trial will gradually be expanded in stages to also cover five international airports, including Terminals 1 and 2 of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), Penang International Airport, Kuching International Airport and Kota Kinabalu International Airport.
